Senate President Justin Alfond sponsors bill to allow sharing of liquor sales revenue between parties
AUGUSTA – A measure to to allow the sharing of liquor sales revenue between auditoriums and sports teams will have a public hearing before the Veterans and Legal Affairs Committee at 1:00 p.m. Today, Tuesday, January 21.
“It was disappointing to see the negotiations between the Portland Pirates and the Cumberland County Civic Center break down after months of working,†said Senate President Justin Alfond of Portland. “It is my hope that this bill will provide the Civic Center and the Pirates with another tool to help both parties come to an amicable solution.â€
This bill would give athletic facilities with a capacity of 3,000 or more the option of sharing liquor sales revenues with sports teams playing at their facilities. These facilities include the Cumberland County Civic Center and the Expo in Portland, the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor, the Androscoggin Bank Colisée in Lewiston, and the Augusta Civic Center.
Added President Alfond, “While my bill will not fix every point of contention, it is my hope that this bill will both parties come to an agreement and bring the Pirates back to where they belong — downtown Portland,â€
